independent agency system
The contracting of insurance companies with agents who are independent contractors to effect propertyliability insurance, issue policies, own the expiration records thereof and, in general, to represent the companies in their communities. Agents may represent more than one company. The system has reached its highest development in the United States; hence, it is often called the "American" agency system.
