independent adjuster

One who adjusts losses on behalf of companies but is not employed by anyone. Paid fee for each loss adjusted, as distinguished from a staff adjuster who is paid a salary by one company for work performed. Not to be confused with public adjuster, who represents the policyholder instead of the company.
